Gerina was a student at Goddard High School for her high school education. As a high-school student she won at the New Mexico Golf State Tournament. In addition, she was a volleyball player and competed at the national level. She attended Texas's University of Texas, Texas in the academic year. During the senior seasons of her professional career, she was the winner of every event where she played. During her undergrad career, she won an award for Conference USA Individual Champion Player of the Year award and the UTEP Female athlete of the year.
